Reporter

We are looking for NowMedia reporters to join our team that covers the beautiful Thompson-Okanagan region of British Columbia. An ideal candidate is a driven, motivated, responsible and creative individual who understands the role and voice of local media. We have the ability to shine a light on important issues, encourage change and highlight wonderful stories in our communities, and we are looking for the right team members to help us do that.

You could be the perfect candidate if:

  • Local news excites you. Whether it’s council meetings, new businesses, local sports teams or serious breaking news stories, we need people that want to be involved and engaged in their community.

  • You are a capable writer who has schooling in journalism or experience working for a publication that provides news.

  • You are reliable and have the ability to multitask and work on a deadline.

  • You understand the ins and outs of social media, both to be able to post stories online and to be able to utilize different platforms to put out various forms of media.

  • You are eager to learn, grow and be open to constructive criticism and feedback that can help you evolve as a writer.

  • You are flexible to work weekends if needed and willing to do the odd story or update outside of your typical work hours if necessary. We are very accommodating when figuring out schedules and holidays, but reporters need to care about and be aware of the brand beyond their 40 hours a week.

  • You love storytelling.

What will you do:

  • Come up with interesting story ideas on your own and have the motivation to do the appropriate research and interviews to execute those stories.

  • While there is a lot of freedom to find and execute your own stories and ideas, you must also be willing to take on assignments from the News Director.

  • Make connections with local people and businesses.

  • Turn certain press releases that do not need follow up interviews into well-structured stories in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Cover events and press conferences as needed.

The experience or skills you need:

  • Strong writing skills and a knowledge of proper journalistic writing and guidelines.

  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a dynamic news team.

  • Experience reaching out and talking to new people to conduct interviews.

  • The creativity to be able to see and formulate a story out of things like news tips, viral videos, social media posts or comments, things you see in your everyday life and more.

  • Being comfortable on camera and having the ability to produce a video story is an added bonus.

If you think you are the right person to join our news team and deliver stories to our wide audience throughout the Thompson-Okanagan, we encourage you to apply.
